When I began my immersion in studying the Bible in Hebrew context four years ago, I had no idea the depth of the layers of the Word of God. While discovering incredible mysteries, I must be honest: I don't always fully understand what I'm learning. But I hold fast to faith, trusting that this journey is key to deepening my walk with Abba Father. Almost 5 years later, I have discovered the more I learn, the less I know.
My weekly study centers on the Torah Portions (or Parashat HaShavua), the systematic division of the first five books of Moses and the Prophets into a 54-week cycle. This tradition, practiced by observant Jewish people for centuries, provides a unifying rhythm for study, ensuring that every community around the world is focusing on the same foundational scriptures each week.
As I recently pondered the "why" behind my own commitment to this cycle, I asked the Father for revelation. He showed me a profound connection, rooted in an ancient event:
The Torah Portions are not just a systematic study; they are a means of unity, containing the commandments of Adonai, the prophecies of the Messiah, and the blueprint for living in a covenant relationship with Him. As the Apostle Paul teaches, "For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that through perseverance and encouragement of the Scriptures, we might have hope" (Romans 15:4).
Here is the powerful insight the Father revealed, connecting this ancient tradition to a pivotal moment in the New Testament:
I’ve always wondered about Yeshua's conversation with the two men on the road to Emmaus after His resurrection (Luke 24:13-29). The two disciples were devastated, having believed Yeshua would redeem Israel, only to see Him crucified.
Yeshua's response to their sorrow and confusion was sharp: "Foolish men, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Didn’t the Christ have to suffer these things and to enter into his glory?" (Luke 24:25-26)
Then comes the revealing statement: "Beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, He explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself." (Luke 24:27)
I always questioned: Why start from the very beginning (Genesis)?
The Father revealed that these men, having been immersed in the weekly Torah study their entire lives, were intimately familiar with the teachings and prophecies contained within the Torah Portions. Yeshua didn't need a New Testament to prove who He was; He used the very scriptures they had been studying—the Portions of Moses and the Prophets—to show them that He was the central figure of their entire tradition.
Studying the Torah Portions gives us a deeper, fuller understanding of the Scriptures as a whole. It provides the essential context for everything Yeshua and the Apostles taught.
This leads to a compelling question for us today:
If Yeshua explained the prophecies concerning His First Coming by "beginning with Moses and from all the prophets," wouldn’t it be vital for us to believe that the answers regarding His Second Coming are also woven throughout those same Scriptures?
The unfolding of God's Word gives light and understanding to the simple (Psalm 119:130). By immersing ourselves in the ancient Hebrew roots, we gain the depth of context needed to truly understand the grand, unified story of God's plan.
Do you want to move past confusion and discover the unifying truth of the entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation? God is inviting you to connect your faith to its powerful Hebrew foundation.
If you are ready to stop feeling "slow of heart" to understand the mysteries of God's Word and start building the foundation for a life of purpose, the journey of true spiritual revelation begins now.
