“For I Know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” Jeremiah 29:11
We have read this passage of scripture many times, quoted it, meditated on it and declared, however, we have overlooked a very important factor which makes the word of God powerful. This is the word of the Lord by the prophet Jeremiah to the children of Israel who were carried away captive by King Nebuchadnezzar into Babylon.
God promised that He would deliver them but until that day comes; they should build houses, plant gardens, get married and have children, and increase in the land of their captivity. He also told them to pray for the peace of the city they dwelt in, for when there is peace in the land they will have peace (Jeremiah 29:4-10). God basically told them to make the best of their situation. They should not weep and mourn but rejoice in Him and seek Him because there will come a day of deliverance. In the midst of their captivity God reminds them of His plans for them. He gave them a reason to have hope.
While you and I may not be held as captives in a strange land, we are held in captivity by our circumstances, situations and our thoughts. Some of us are in financial captivity, sickness, oppression, and depression. Whatever your form of captivity may be rest assured that the word of the Lord stands true for you today as it did for the children of Israel. God’s thoughts toward you are of peace, and not evil, to give you an expected end (a hope and a future). God has not forgotten you. Your day of deliverance will come. Just find a way to pray for peace in your captivity. Make the best of the situation anticipating and expecting the day of deliverance. Learn to rejoice in the Lord in the midst of your circumstances knowing that God is working things out for you.
The word of the Lord is to remind us that we have a God who cares. He promises never to leave us not forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). We can hold on to His promises in spite of our current experiences.
